UKSA 2011

Gotta warm up..

The UK’s Strongest Athlete went down a storm at the wknd, but before I indulge into the nitty gritty results a big thanks has to go out to everyone who turned up and supported the event, being the first event we have organised we were just as nervous as the competitors.

A special thank you has to go out to everyone who helped out on the day, this includes: Neil Kirwan, Ross Edgley, Mark Peacock, Bam, Jay, Jack and of course my wife Robbo as well as Tim and Lynne from Global Therapies. Another thank you goes out to our clients who helped with the making of the lovely food on the day, so thanks to Louise, Claire, Mel, Jo Jo and of course Alexa with the cakes!! In addition to this, thanks to MyProtein who sponsored the event and Target Fitness for letting us use the venue.

Jay Bone helping out

The UKSA was organised to try and get the best athletes together and compete, this was based on Joe Defranco’s WSA, although we wanted to make it our own and so changed some of the events. The events were strongman in nature but it was not a competition for strongmen, I know this is hard to understand for some but what else would I call the events??  The UKSA was for athletes who take part in a sport but wanted to test themselves against other athletes from other sports in one competition.

Okay onto the day…….

Bryan killing the tyre!!

The first event was the Tyre Flip + Sprint 20m. For the first 3 events it was decided that athletes go in alphabetical order. The Over 90kg category went first with Adam Bell being the first name on the list, its always hard going first in any competition, so well done to Adam as he attacked it very well. This event was won by Ben Kirkup with a time of 12.06. The Under 90kg category was won by Joe Lightfoot with a time of 11.60

Martin Blackmore tearing up the Farmers!

The second event was the Farmers Walk. The overs had 90kg in each hand and was won by Liam McCrea with a time of 18.53. The unders had 80kg in each hand and this was won by Joe Lightfoot again with a time of 15.41.  A stand out performance in this event was by an athlete called Luke Sandler from Spartan Performance, due to the fact he never gave up. I think this is something that you cannot learn as an athlete but you either have or don’t have the determination/will to succeed, this is something that definitely seperates the winners and the losers.

Before the forth event we tallied up the points and paired the athletes depending on their overall standing. Competing head to head made the athletes step it up that little bit more.

Nas and Chris head to head!!

Phil Marsden putting in a great performance

The forth event was the Standing Overhand Rope Pull. With Liam McCrea and Shawn Frawley 1st and 2nd respectively these 2 went last, and they didnt disappoint, with Frawley pipping Liam to the line.

The unders next up with still the top 4 in contention, Going head to head was Nas and Chris Thomas, 3rd and 4th, a slow start from Nas saw Chris get a good lead, but then over the 20m distance Nas Pulled it back and just nipped it on the line. Next up Joe and Bryan, with Joe stating prior to the event that this was his strongest, and he proved that with a time of 14.41 which won him the event.

Lyndon smashing the Sandbag

The last and final event was the Sprint, Sandbag and Sled Medley. The top three in the overs were seperated by 2 points, so this was anyones! Lyndon Robertson, currently in 3rd put in a great time and let the leaders know he was there. Next up was Liam and Shawn, both had a great start although Shawn dropped the bag which cost him dearly, which Liam then went onto win the dual. The event was won by Adam Bell with a time of 28.65.

Points mean everything!!

No one knew who had taken victory, but after tallying up the points, Liam McCrea had the title of UK’s Strongest Athlete Over 90kg, it worked out that if he had been 300th of a second slower in the medley then it would have gone down to a 6th event decider!

Under 90kg next, and this was between 2 people, Bryan and Joe, with Bryan currently winning by 1 point, Joe had the work to do. Again it came down to mistakes with Bryan dropping the bag twice to give Joe the win and claim the title of UK’s Strongest Athlete Under 90kg.

Top Athletes

Everyone on the day put in a great performance, and competing like this only brings the best out of you, with many athletes hitting pb’s all day! Competing is a great way to test and push yourself and is something that we will be doing more of with our athletes.

Overall it was a great day and I hope everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Looking forward to a bigger, better and maybe some small changes for UKSA 2012 already

Stay tuned for the UKSA Video Montage

Until next time
