Yep, you heard right, we’re back for another seriously awesome day of competition to uncover the Strength & Performance ‘UK’s Strongest Athlete 2013’ We’ve truly had the best time since the idea was born over 3 years ago. We’ve also been lucky to have the chance to work with some kick-ass people who have helped us make our dream happen. The support from our clients, friends and family as well as our sponsors and of course you guys, the competitors has been unwavering and for that we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Ok, enough of the soppy s**t already! This year we’re kicking more ass than ever. We’re never content to sit back on our laurels and pat ourselves on the back too much, so this year we’ve decided to open up the competition a little more. We’re going to split the girls into two categories to give the sub 65 kg’s a fighting chance at grabbing top honours. And on top of that we’re going to open up a new category for the guys – The Under 80 kgs (depending on at least 10 competitors). So yeah, we’re not messing about this year! Check out the full list of categories below:
Womens Under 65 kg
Womens Over 65 kg (90 kg limit)
Mens Under 80 kg
Mens Under 90 kg
Mens Over 90 kg (115 kg limit)
NB: We will be weighing ALL competitors on the morning to make sure you’re on weight. We will allow 0.5 kilos over at both the bottom and top limit.
We’re moving venues this year, so for the first time we will be holding UKSA at The Soccer Dome, Trafford which is conveniently situated right behind the Chill Factore (by the Trafford Centre), just a few yards off the M60. It’s a great facility with loads of parking so make sure you bring your crew/family down for a day out of fierce competition and no doubt some fun too! We’re looking forward to working with our new partners to make this an extra special competition.
In a twist from the previous two years we will be holding an ‘elimination’ stage of the competition. So this year, for the first time, following the first 3 events the top 10 only from each category will go through to compete for the 1st prize. This should make things a little more interesting, and ensure that no-one tries to coast through on the back of a good first and second event.
We’re also looking to award a Cash Prize this year to the male and female athlete with the most overall points so for some it could be double prizes! Exact details will be finalised in due course so keep an eye out on this blog and our FB/Twitter feeds.
But what good are categories and prizes without a set of events in which to compete? Wait no longer brothers and sisters, we’re about to indulge y’all:
Event 1 – Overhead Press Medley – 3 separate pieces of kit will be used for reps/time from the following: Dumbbells, Kettlebells, Fat Bar, Log, Sandbag. Be prepared for ALL – we’re not giving you everything this year!
Event 2 – Farmers Walk – This is definitely a firm favourite with UKSA competitors and spectators alike. So we had to put it back in this year. We’re not giving any specifics just yet but rest assured, you’ll have to pick these up and run with them over distance to make sure you’re ready to shift some weight.
Event 3 – Rope Sled Pull-in plus Low Prowler Push-back – Slightly different from last year; Athletes will hand over hand pull a loaded sled on a thick rope in to the feet and then go straight into a low handle Prowler sprint for the line.
** After the first 3 rounds we will assemble all points and the top 10 only from each category will go through to the final stage of competition to compete for the title of ‘UK’s Strongest Athlete 2013’ **
Event 4 – High Prowler Sprint – Simplicity itself; A head to head dash for the tape over a 20 metre (approx) course, pushing a loaded Prowler. It doesn’t get any better than this!
Event 5 – Medley – We always finish with a good medley, this really separates the men from the boys and the women from the girls! We didn’t see any point changing a winning formula from last year, so the grande finale is back by popular demand. Sprint 20 metres to a water-filled keg then sprint back. Return to grab a Heavy-ass sandbag and sprint back again, then dash back one last time to grab the weighted sled for the gruelling reverse drag through the finish line.
** Remember, only the Top 10 from each category will prevail to the final 2 events so be prepared to bust your ass and COMPETE!** Also, UKSA is NOT open professional Strongman or Powerlifters. This competition is for athletes (amateur or professional) from any other sport/discipline. The events will be on the light side for the seasoned Strongman/Powerlifter. **
Entry costsThe cost for entry for each competitor is £30. £2 of which will be donated to Saint Francis Hospice. We will also be collecting on the day for Saint Francis Hospice and will be holding our inaugural cake fest’ courtesy of Alexa ‘The Cake Lady’ Taylor, so collectively we hope to raise loads of dosh for this most worthy cause.
